Of
all the brothers and sisters in our family, my mother was the only person who would stand
up to Uncle Louie and engage him in a one-on-one debate. They were like the top two
candidates in a presidential race. |

My mother
was a very determined woman. I remember the time she learned to drive a car. It was while
we were living on Avon Avenue. She took lessons from a friend of mine and he used to take
her out to drive on several occasions. Since she was a heavy woman, it was difficult
getting in and out of a car. She finally had to give it up, and never got her
license.
Actually there was no need for her to get a license, since I was the driver in the family,
and there was no need for another driver. But she was determined, and you can never say
that she didn't drive a car. |
